A few weeks ago, I saw a sign saying that the old Cupertino bakery was being rechristened as Peacock Restaurant. Yes, the same Peacock that has multiple branches across the Bay Area. I was definitely excited. Cupertino Bakery served very average food at not so average prices and it was my closest Indian food option from work. It was as if my prayers were answered or so it seemed. My experience at Peacock in Santa Clara showed a bigger buffet with above average fare (not the best but definitely passable and better).
The Friday it opened, the place was filled to the brim with many Cupertino folks jostling to get a table. Added to that was a first day $5 buffet. After a 20 minute wait, we got a seat. My hopes for a good lunch was soon dashed with pretty bad food all around. Limited menu and crappy food does not make for a happy camper. I was all set to write my reviews when a colleague recommended that I give the place one more chance- maybe it was the first day chaos. Maybe it was the $5 mess. So I decided to refrain from writing and posting a scathing review of the place.
I got my opportunity to revisit the place a few weeks later. I was incredibly doubtful and not expecting much. Thankfully, the food was decent enough to not disappoint. The buffet was a tad bigger. The vegetarian options were reasonable, although not too many. The vegetarian appetizers were decent. They offered a dosa cooked to order with each buffet. There was also a couple of desserts and complimentary Indian chai. All in all, the food was definitely a couple of notches above my first outing to the place.
Interestingly enough, I happened to go to the same place once more the very next day. The food standard was no different than the previous day which makes me think the inaugural day was just an aberration. Price of buffet is a little on the expensive side, given the just enough but not too many vegetarian options. Otherwise, for folks living and working in Cupertino, this is an acceptable Indian buffet.
Ambiance: 7/10. Nothing fancy. Reasonably clean.
Service: 8.5/10. The dosa order was taken fairly quickly and brought to the table soon after. Not much else for a buffet.
Food: 7.75/10. Passable by South Bay standards. Decent by Cupertino standards. Given the proximity to work, it is an acceptable option.
Price: 7.5/10. Price is on the high side for a buffet. On Fridays, price goes up by an extra dollar. For the number of vegetarian dishes they offer, the buffet is tad expensive.
Overall: 7.75/10. Definitely a step above the erstwhile Cupertino Bakery. But a step below Peacock in Santa Clara.
