Cal-Mex lunch fare at Freebirds World Burrito in Cupertino, CA

About a year ago, a sign went up on Stevens Creek Blvd indicating that a new burrito place was going to open soon. As a big fan of Mexican food of all sorts from Chipotle to your mom and pop authentic Mexican place, this was going to be a great addition to the local Mexican/cal-mex food presence from Rio Adobe to Aqui to Chipotle. Time went on and on and the place never opened. Meanwhile, a Philz coffee and Boudin SF opened next door and started doing business by Summer 2013. Finally, Freebirds opened its doors in December 2013 and I visited them last week. Here is my brief review.

Freebirds is a burrito chain not unlike Chipotle in their offering of simple and limited Cal-Mex/Mexican fare with natural ingredients. The menu is relatively small in terms of actual dishes but infinitely configurable with sauces and garnishments. On a busy Friday afternoon, a bunch of us walked in to try their fare. I ordered a veggie salad in a bowl with all the veggies they had to offer, Spanish rice, black beans, medium hot salsa, guacamole and the works. Others ordered veggie burritos or chicken burrito bowls. Service was excellent and portion sizes are generous. Moreover, the person making my bowl ensured that I was happy with portions of individual components repeatedly asking me if I wanted more of one or the other. This is a welcome change from everywhere else where they try to pack in the burrito as quickly as possible and move along the assembly line.

Prices are reasonable- my bowl worked out to $7 incl taxes. Guac is complementary on the veggie salad bowl while costing $1 extra on all other offerings. My portion size was excellent. The salad was pretty good- I definitely would want to try the spicier salsa the next time around. Overall, happy camper. Not significantly better than Chipotle but a good alternative.

Ambiance: 8.25/10. Interesting and very SoCalesque.

Service: 8.5/10. Very happy with their service and attention to customer.

Food: 8.25/10. Nothing extraordinary but pretty tasty stuff. If you like Chipotle, you will like this.

Price: 8.25/10. Very Chipotle like. $7 for a large veggie salad bowl is reasonable IMHO.

Restroom: N/A

Overall: 8.25/10. Good start. It all depends on how they sustain against the competition and keep things exciting.

  1. I take my kids to the one on the Alameda once a month on average and they always enjoy it. I think the ordering process is much less rushed than at Chipotle. They seem to have more options for rice, chicken, and salsa than Chipotle, too.

    • I agree. Found the overall experience a little less rushed than Chipotle. And yes, more options for sure. The only + for Chipotle is the new tofu thingie they offer for vegetarians. Otherwise, I’d call it a wash if not better for Freebirds.
