Having heard so much about the wide array of vegetarian options at Asteria Grill in Sunnyvale, CA, I decided to finally give it a shot today. I am happy to report that the food is good and I am definitely going back again to try more dishes from their menu.
Asteria Grill is located at the intersection of Mathilda Avenue and Ross Avenue near the 101 ramp in Sunnyvale, CA. It is fairly easy to spot on Mathilda Avenue. I went in at around 12:30 in the afternoon and the place was pretty busy. The inside of the place is what I would call “ostentatiously Greek” in a very good way. The restaurant makes no bones about its Greek origin/connection and it is pleasantly corny.
The menu offers quite a few vegetarian entrees, a bunch of veggie appetizers and a whole lot of salads to boot. For the appetizer, we picked the Tirokafteri which is a mildly spicy dip made with jalapenos, peppers, feta and yoghurt. To drink, I picked a bottled sour cherry drink. For my main course, I selected a Horiatiki salad and for dessert I chose my favorite Baklava. Food arrived almost instantly after we paid and took a seat.
The Tirokafteri was addictively good and the warm and soft pita bread didnt help the cause. The sour cherry drink (bottled unfortunately) had a nice zing to it. My salad was fantastic. It was a nice lunch portion and flavorful without being overpowering. I wolfed it down hungrily and pretty quickly, I must say. By the time I got to the Baklava, I was really full. I put it aside to be eaten as a mid afternoon snack, back at work. When I finally got to it, I was mildly disappointed. I like my baklava, warm and moist. While the warm part can be forgiven, the moist part should only get better with time. The filo was in parts well made and in others, not so. The filling was good but not sufficient for the size of the baklava. I know, I know. I am nitpicking. But given how good everything else was, I had to find something to complain, albeit small.
I loved my trip to Asteria Grill and strongly recommend it for vegetarians in the neighborhood or visiting. Good stuff here.
Ambiance: 8.5/10. Unabashedly Greek. Loved it.
Service: 8.75/10. Service was quick and pleasant.
Food: 8.25/10. If it weren’t for the baklava, it would have rated higher.
Price: 8/10. I would call it an affordable lunch.
Overall: 8.5/10. Wide vegetarian selection and a nice pleasant place for a good lunch. Go for it.
